May 17 - Jan 4    René Lalique: Enchanted by Glass

This major exhibition will bring together glass, jewelry, production molds, and design drawings by René Lalique (French, 1860-1945), dating from about 1893 to Lalique’s death in 1945. As a successful jeweler Lalique experimented with glass in his designs, which eventually led to a career in which he fully embraced the material. His aesthetic choices in his designs informed the styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in France, and the objects he created have become iconic reflections of these periods. Lalique also embraced industrial innovations, like mass production, allowing luxury glass to be placed in more and more households around the world. May 17 - Jan 4    Designing for a New Century: Works on Paper by Lalique and his Contemporaries

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, René Lalique’s jewelry, and then his beautifully designed glass objects and vessels, made him an influential figure in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His work was acclaimed at the international industrial expositions, particularly the 1900 and 1925 Paris Expositions. Designing for a New Century: Works on Paper by Lalique and His Contemporaries surveys the extraordinary glass art created by Lalique and his European contemporaries, including Marinot, Herbst, Gallé, and Val St. Lambert, through design drawings, trade catalogs, period photographs, and rare books from the Rakow Library’s special collections. Sep 12 - Oct 24    Incantation: Works on Paper and Mixed Media Sculpture by Gigi Alvaré
171 Cedar Arts Center is pleased to announce the opening of Incantation: Works on Paper and Mixed Media Sculpture by Gigi Alvaré on Friday, September 12, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Houghton Gallery located at 155 Cedar Street, Corning, NY. The exhibition is free and open to the public. The exhibit is open September 12 through October 24, 2014.

Alvaré's work evokes the phenomenon of movement as expressed in human experience, the body, memory and emotion using a fusion of ink and pastels on paper. The series of post-modern invocation - more revelation that narrative, more rhizomatic than linear, moving from subconscious to conscious, unformed to formed, abstract to concrete. Alvaré is a visual artist, performer and writer.

Her artwork has been exhibited throughout New York State. She has created large visual elements for the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration and the Village Halloween Parade, New York City. Through the Touchtone Center for Children, she has written and performed numerous plays. Currently the Director of Education at the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY, Alvaré has worked extensively in arts-in-education school programs, both in New York City and the Hudson River Valley since 1984.

Oct 23    Gov. Affairs Program: Stop the HIT Coalition with Congressman Reed
Small business owners in New York and across the country are facing a new financial burden in the form of the health insurance tax, or HIT, which went into effect this year as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). This new tax is estimated to cost over $100 billion—an amount that will be almost entirely passed on to small businesses and their workers who purchase coverage in what is known as the “fully insured market.”

Congressman Tom Reed recently cosponsored the Small Business and Family Relief Act (H.R. 3367), a bipartisan bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would provide immediate relief from the HIT for two years. Congressman Reed has also cosponsored the Jobs and Premium Protection Act (H.R. 763), which would repeal the HIT and permanently relieve small businesses of this tax.

New York is home to 2 million small businesses, which employ more than 7 million workers. The Stop the HIT Coalition, a broad-based group representing small businesses, will host a discussion with Congressman Reed and local businesses about why this issue is important.
